Let’s conduct all over the world!

Rinne Muramatsu, 6th Grade, Okaido Elementary School

On the day of the interview, there was a concert on at the Ishinomaki General Gymnasium, and afterwards Yutaka Sado took time for us. He is a very famous conductor. There are two reasons why he became a conductor. Firstly, his mother was a piano and singing teacher, and he grew up in an environment where there was always music around him. The other reason was that he admired Seiji Ozawa, and so he had his mother take him to a concert, and he thought that conducting was amazing. At university he studied the flute as his major, and did not forget that passion as he became a conductor.
A long time before the earthquake hit, Sado came to Ishinomaki City Hall to perform in a concert. He says that during the times when he visited Ishinomaki after the earthquake, it made him sad that the town along the coast that used to be there was gone. He remembers getting a lump in his throat when those who came to see the concert in the gymnasium cried while thanking him for coming, and his heart was filled with the need to encourage everyone.
When we heard Sados childhood stories, it was surprise after surprise! He actually hated the piano! Although he liked playing the piano, practicing everyday was difficult, as it meant he didnt have time to do things like play with friends.
The first time we got close and saw Sado, our first impression was hes tall! His height is now 6ft 1 (186cm), but he told us that when he was in 6 Grade at Elementary School, he was as tall as 5ft 9 (176cm). Whats more, he made a comedy trio with his friends that performed shows on school trips, and he would always play the groups bratty leader. And, in his Elementary school yearbook, he wrote that he wanted to conduct Berlins famous orchestra, and he made that dream come true.
Sado has three goals from now on. Firstly, he wants to conduct the famous Berlin and Vienna Orchestras again. Also, because he has still never conducted an American Orchestra, he would like to do that. Lastly, he will report to the people of Japan what he has seen, and his own personal experience of those things.
Sado had a message for the people in the area struck by the disaster. The Super Kids Orchestra (SKO), of which he is the artistic director, was formed in 2003 as the prior project of the Hyogo Performing Arts Centre, which was opened as a symbol of the reconstruction after the Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake, so their mission is to bring encouragement to areas affected by the disaster. He stated that he would like to come and perform in Ishinomaki again as well.
