Takayuki Atsumi of Yagawa
Thank you for the delicious
sea squirts

Mr. Atsumi was born on 2 September 1982, which makes him 30 years old. He was inspired to become a fisherman by the father of his friend who was a fisherman and he works in Yagawa on the Oshika Peninsula. Mr. Atsumi had always been able to gather sea urchins and sea squirts. However, he was not able to gather any after the earthquake and tsunami. It takes 3 years until sea squirts are ready to be harvested so next year he will be able to start harvesting them again. Sea squirts are gathered in July and August. Sea squirts are covered in lots of little bumps with two special ones: one in the shape of a plus sign which is the mouth and another in the shape of a minus sign which is the rear end. Sea squirts are really strange-looking creatures. Why did the people from long time ago get the idea of eating them? “Maybe they had nothing to eat and were hungry.” Atsumi thinks. Apparently they are best eaten fresh, as soon as they have been gathered. Atsumi wanted to be a baseball player when he was a child and he likes playing with children on his days off. His message to the young reporters writing for this newspaper was: Please write more articles about Ishinomaki since the earthquake and the tsunami, from the standpoint of children, for lots of people to read.
