Owl art on temporary housing
Let’s spread our wings and not give in to the earthquake

I am interested in art. I would like anyone in the world to know about the people of Ishinomaki who are inspiring through art. So I have written about Hana Abe (2nd year Watanoha Junior High School student) who painted a picture of a bird on the wall of the temporary housing.
Last autumn Hana apparently painted a picture in the temporary housing development. One day, a flyer advertising a wall art event inside the development dropped through her letterbox. Hana has always loved paintings. She decided to participate because she wanted to inspire everyone. At first she was the only child painting with adults. But gradually more young children started to join in and they kept drawing until the final picture emerged.
Using brushes and paint they painted an owl. Initially the bristles were too stiff so she made mistakes but slowly got used to it and did a lot of painting.
Although it was difficult to paint the owl big enough to cover the wall, the ladies living in the temporary apartments said, “this picture cheers us up” and as they became cheerful, she was happy.
However, because of the measures against cold in the apartments, all of the bird paintings painted along with other people were unfortunately covered and could not be seen anymore.
As during the construction of the apartments there was no heat insulation and because winter got very cold, construction works were done to insert it. Due to these works, the walls were covered and the paintings were hidden. Even now the pictures of that time bring back her memories.
She was better at drawing animals and imaginary things rather than people. As far as bird painting were concerned, “I drew the birds thinking that, since birds spread their wings and fly, I shouldn’t give in to the earthquake, like the birds, I should spread my wings and fly”, Hana said.
Hana dreams of becoming an entertainer in the future. “Meeting an entertainer excites everyone and I would also like to inspire people. I would like to go to many different places and meet different people and cherish these connections”. I feel that Hana’s strong sentiments towards painting and her wish to inspire people is admirable.
