日和アートセンターは、約１か月間、アーティストが泊まって、個展をし、制作やワークショップをする場所だ。震災の後にできて、今までにいろいろなアーティストが滞在した。今回展示しているリチャード・バイヤーズさんに話を聞いた。
リチャード・バイヤーズさんは、日本を含め3カ国で活動をしているオーストラリア出身のアーティストだ。音に反応する光の映像や写真、線画、立体作品を作っている。小さい作品をつくるのには1時間、大きい作品なら3時間かかるそうだ。今回は、石巻の街中にある建物を描いていた。線画の対象になる建物は、街を歩きながら「これだ」というものを写真に残し、アトリエに戻ってから描いたという。また、お客さんからリクエストがあるとその線画も描いてきたそうだ。リチャードさんは、建物の絵をリクエストされて描いていると、同じ地元の人でもその建物の思い出や知っていることが違うため、同じ建物の話をいろんな人としているとよりイメージが膨らんで楽しく、よかったと思っている。
30年前、7才の時から作品を作っているそうだ。小学校3年生だった。（注1）はじめての作品展はドイツの首都ベルリンで2008年に行った。
線画を描くのに使っているペンの会社がなくなってしまった。だいたい10枚描いたらペンのインクを交換するけれど、もうペンが買えないので、今もっているペンのインクがなくなったらこの線画を描くのはやめようと思っているそうだ。
リチャードさんは、石巻の子どもたちに「冒険を楽しんでほしい。絵をかくときにはいつも同じ色じゃない色を使ってほしい」と言っていた。
注1:オーストラリアでは5才で小学校に入学するので、3年生は7才になる。

The Artist’s Way in Hiyori Art Centre

Hiyori Art Centre is a place where artists stay for about a month to create and show their work as well as set up workshops. The centre was established after the earthquake and until now has been accommodating various artists. This story is about Richard Byers, who is currently showing his work in the Centre.
Richard Byers is an artist from Australia, whose career spans across three different countries including Japan. He creates videos, photographs, line drawings and 3D pieces that show light responding to sound as. Small pieces apparently take 1 hour to create but if it is a larger piece it can take up to 3 hours. This time, he was making drawings of buildings located in the streets of Ishinomaki. He walked through the town taking pictures of the buildings that made him think, “That’s a good one!” and made line drawings of the buildings from the photographs back in his studio.
Byers told that he also takes sketch requests from customers. When undertaking such requests, listening to various local people’s varying memories and knowledge of the buildings broadens his image of them, and make the whole process more entertaining. His career as an artist started 30 years ago when he was 7 years old and in his 3rd year of elementary school.* His first exhibition was held in 2008 in Berlin, Germany.
The company producing the pens he sketches with has now gone. The ink in the pens runs out after drawing about 10 pages; however, since he cannot buy these pens anymore, he has decided to stop doing these drawings when his last pen runs dry.
Byers said to the children of Ishinomaki, “I want you to enjoy adventure. When drawing, I want you to try using colours that you don’t usually use.”
*Since in Australia, children start school at the age of 5, when in their third year they are 7 years old.
